Bob Arum, the founder and CEO of boxing promotion company Top Rank, recently made the incredulous claim that anabolic steroids are no longer used in the sport of boxing. The boxing promoter asserted that dietary supplements now provide all of the benefits of steroids without any of the negative side effects such as roid rage.
“[T]hey know that you can achieve all of the benefits that you used to achieve with steroids with natural supplements,” according to Arum.
Arum believes that steroids may have once been a problem in boxing but now dietary supplements are so effective that they have replaced steroids in the sport. He believes that “totally legal supplements” and “state of the art conditioning methods” have made steroids obsolete.
“The steroid problem is fading into the past,” said Arum.
Arum defended nutritionists and trainers with a history of steroid dealing that are currently working with boxers. He does not believe that people like Victor Conte and Angel “Memo” Heredia would risk selling performance-enhancing drugs to athletes.
Conte was convicted of selling steroids in the BALCO steroid scandal while Heredia reportedly testified against many of his former clients’ steroid activities on behalf of BALCO investigators in exchange for immunity against prosecution.
After serving a short prison sentence, Conte has worked with WBC bantamweight champion N0nito Donaire and IBF welterweight champion Andre Berto.
The world recently learned that Heredia has been working with Juan Manuel Marquez in the second episode of the HBO reality series “24/7: Pacquiao-Marquez”.
Bob Arum has had to defend Top Rank boxer Manny Pacquiao against accusations of steroid use on many occasions. Arum felt compelled to also defend Marquez as well. Marquez and Pacquiao face each other in a rematch taking place in Las Vegas on November 12, 2011.
