Steroids + Female MMA = Twitter Catfight?

UFC President Dana White may have prematurely announced the end of the female featherweight division in Strikeforce. White told ESPN Radio Las Vegas that Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos’ positive steroid test results would mark the end of the division. “[Cyborg Santos is] getting stripped of the title. This pretty much kills the division,” according to White.

Maybe White didn’t anticipate the extra publicity resulting from the Winstrol metabolites discovered in Santos’ urine sample. He certainly didn’t anticipate the heated war of the words on Twitter between some of female mixed martial arts’ biggest stars.

“Rowdy” Ronda Rousey, top-ranked female MMA featherweight and judo bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, has been very outspoken about her dislike of steroid users in general and her dislike of Cyborg Santos in particular.

Rousey made her feelings about steroid users known in a recent interview with TapouT Radio.

“The people who take steroids, it ultimately comes from insecurity. It comes from them thinking that they’re not good enough without it. You know what? I’m crazy enough to think that I could win a fight on one leg in a ring of fire. I don’t need any drugs and when I see that people feel a need to do that, it’s a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of mental weakness and that they can’t find their own confidence without feeling like they need to cheat.”

Rousey reacted to Santos’ suspension in several interviews including one with “The MMA Show with Mauro Ranallo”. She told Ranallo that she always knew Santos used steroids, never respected her because of it and was happy to see her suspended for steroid use.

“I don’t have the least bit respect for her because I always knew she was a cheater, and now everyone else knows too,” said Rousey.

Cyborg Santos was clearly bothered by Rousey’s celebration of her misfortune.

Santos promised her Twitter fans that Rousey would be her next “victim” or “vitima” as they say in Brazil. This would presumably be after Santos returns from her one year suspension assuming that Strikeforce welcomes her back.

“Próxima vitima… Ronda!!! No mercy!!!” wrote Santos. Santos included a post-fight photo of Gina Carano after Santos defeated Carano in the first-ever Strikeforce Women’s Championship contested in the Featherweight class. Santos chose to use a photoshopped image that exaggerated the facial damage inflicted upon Carano.

Rousey quickly responded, “You don’t just have a dick, you are a dick for posting that picture of Gina, you cheater.”

Ronda Rousey

As is the Twitter war of the words between Rousey and Santos wasn’t progressing nicely on its own, MMA Mania added fuel to the fire by incorrectly attributing the following quote to Rousey. “Wow Cris Cyborg aka Lou Feriggno has no fucking class. I can’t believe this idiot, after they prove she cheats and that she’s half man she still talks shit.”

@MMAmaniaNews you quoted me incorrectly in your article - half I said and half a fan said, not cool.

Rousey did not take too kindly to the mistake. “seriously, change the quote it’s pissing me off,” wrote Rousey on Twitter.

Ronda Rousey

The Twitter war between Rousey and Santos is definitely more entertaining than Santos’ 16-second defeat of challenger Hiroko Yamanaka in “Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Masvidal” last month. It remains to be seem if the drama can continue to build momentum for a match between Rousey and Santos in 2013.
