An inquest into the death of a 46-year old former competitive bodybuilder has been conducted to determine the cause of death. David Kilroy was found dead at his home by his daughter on May 15, 2012. The inquest involved an autopsy and examined the use of various drugs by the deceased, including anabolic steroids, cocaine and alcohol. The coroner examined what role they may have played a role in his untimely death.

Kilroy competed in the Mr. Britain and Mr. Universe bodybuilding contests during the 1980s. He competed four times in the Mr. Britain contest between 1986 and 1989 according to MuscleMemory.com. He had modest success placing third or fourth at each event. Kilroy also placed third at the 1986 Mr. Universe (Junior division) in London where he was filmed by GMV Bodybuilding for the video “David Kilroy: English Junior Champion.”

The inquest took place at South London Coroner’s Court inside the Crodyon Magistrates’ Court on July 5, 2012. Coroner Dr. Roy Palmer listened to testimony regarding Kilroy’s use of anabolic steroids during training and competition as an amateur bodybuilding in the 1980s.

Palmer reported that Kilroy’s history of steroid, cocaine and alcohol use may have all contributed to his death. However, the cause of death was attributed to dilated cardiomyopathy. Dilated cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the heart becomes weakened and fails to efficiently pump blood throughout the body. Sudden death sometimes occurs in patients suffering from this condition.

Kilroy’s blood alcohol content was three times the legal drink driving limit at the time of his death. Kilroy’s death was originally reported as the result of an accident at home. However, an injury to his head likely occurred after he collapsed.

There was no indication that Kilroy had recently used anabolic steroids or used steroids since he stopped competing in bodybuilding competitions in the late 1980s.
