Chael Sonnen Jokes About His Steroid Use

Chael Sonnen joked about steroids and his steroid-related suspension while answering questions by UFC Fight Club members who were in Philadelphia for UFC 133. Sonnen tested positive for anabolic steroids (testosterone) at UFC 117. Sonnen was originally suspended for one year. However, Sonnen appealed to the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) last year claiming that he used testosterone as part of a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) program prescribed by his physician. The CSAC accepted Sonnen’s HRT defense but did not entirely exonerate him because he failed to follow the proper protocol for notifying the CSAC of his medical condition (hypogonadism). [Read more…]

UFC Fires Nate Marquardt for Testosterone Replacement Therapy Problems

Mixed martial artist Nate Marquardt acknowledged using the anabolic steroid testosterone for medically-supervised testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) during an appearance on MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani on June 28, 2011. He was treated with testoterone injections after his primary care physician discovered that Marquardt’s serum blood testosterone levels were low. Ultimate Fight Championship’s Dana White fired Nate Marquardt due to what he considered a questionable need for TRT after he was suspended by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission prior to a June 2011 fight with Rick Story. Japanese Greco-Roman Wrestler and MMA Prospect Tests Positive for Masteron

Japanese Greco-Roman wrestling champion and MMA prospect Katsuya Kitamura tested positive for the anabolic steroid drostanolone. Drostanolone enanthate is the active ingredient in Masteron. The Japanese Anti-Doping Agency (JADA) banned Kitamura for two years which means he will miss the 2012 London Olympics. The three-time Japanese national champion in the 96-kilo Greco-Roman wrestling weight class had hoped to represent Japan once again on the international stage. [Read more…]

UFC President Dana White Says Only Morons Get Caught Using Steroids

Dana White, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president, has been on the defensive trying to defend the integrity of the UFC’s anti-doping program. The UFC claims that it has the most rigorous steroid-testing program in North America. However, it appears that only morons get caught in the UFC program. (What about the “smart” athletes?)

Beyond Steroids: Plastic Surgery to Create MMA Super-Fighters

Athletes in all sports are constantly seeking methods to enhance performance. Their search often takes them beyond performance-enhancing drugs such as anabolic steroids and human growth hormone. Most recently, mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters have been turning to plastic surgery for a competitive advantage. Performance enhancement via plastic surgery is informed by a detailed knowledge of the nature of cuts.

The nature of MMA leads fighters to suffer multiple facial lacerations over the course of their career. Once a fighter experiences cuts, they become increasingly more susceptible to future cuts compared to younger fighters who have never or rarely been cut before. The increased likelihood of being cut occurs for several reasons including the development of scar tissue and also improperly sutured wounds. If doctors only suture the superficial layer of the skin, then the underlying tissue does not always heal properly. [Read more…]
