Prescription Medicines Cost Too Much? Blame the World Anti-Doping Agency

The cost of popular prescription drugs may have just gone up. GlaxoSmithKline and Roche Holdings have entered agreements with the World Anti-Doping Agency offering company resources to help the anti-doping agency catch athletes who use performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). If you think the cost of prescription drugs are increasing too much, you can now blame the World Anti-Doping Agency as one of the culprits. [Read more…]

Lance Armstrong Story Reported Differently by French and American News Agencies

John Keker, the founding partner of the San Francisco law firm Keker and Van Nest, recently filed a motion in Los Angeles federal court on behalf of his client Lance Armstrong. All three English-language news agencies all reported the story. The Associated Press (AP), the Agence France-Press (AFP) and Reuters Group (Reuters) usually report similar accounts of major news stories.

A casual reader of the recent Lance Armstrong story would come away with a very different perspective depending on which wire story they read. The court filing was characterized as an attack on the freedom of the press according to one account whereas other accounts characterized the motion as an attack on federal government employees for violating grand jury secrecy laws. North Korean Soccer Team Tests Positive for Steroids After Being Struck by Lightning

Five members of the North Korean soccer team (Korea DPR) have tested positive for 14 different banned anabolic steroids at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Frankfurt, Germany. The North Korean delegation told FIFA that a “lightning strike” was responsible for the positive steroid tests. The five players were reportedly struck by lightning while training in North Korea on June 8, 2011. A traditional Chinese medicine containing an extract from the hairy gland of an Asian musk deer was used to treat the players for the effects of the lightning strike. Judge Declares Mistrial in Roger Clemens Trial After Federal Prosecutors Make Colossal Mistake

United States District Judge Reggie Walton declared a mistrial in the Roger Clemens case today after federal prosecutors made a colossal mistake. Judge Walton clearly blamed the government for the mistrial. Assistant United States Attorneys Steven Durham and Daniel Butler likely suffered one of the most humiliating days of their careers as Judge Walton chastised them for making a mistake that even a first-year law student would have known to avoid. Judge Walton reminded the prosecutors how much taxpayer payer money was spent on the Roger Clemens investigation and prosecution. He was troubled at the inexcusable and careless attempts by the federal prosecutors to break the rules set by the court thereby forcing a mistrial. [Read more…]

WADA Wants Police to Help Them Catch Athletes Who Use Steroids

David Howman, the Director General of the World Anti-Doping Agency, has admitted that the agency’s anti-doping tests are ineffective against the “sophisticated doper”. WADA’s solution is to take advantage of police and governmental investigative agencies in their fight against dopers. Athletes can beat the anti-dopers, but why not see if they can beat the police too?

Chicago Tribune Promotes Steroids Hysteria with Poor Fact-Checking

The Chicago Tribune, the eighth largest newspaper in the United States by circulation, recently published an article claiming that anabolic steroid use had increased dramatically among high school seniors in 2010. The article by Mike Helfgot claimed that anabolic steroid use among male high school seniors increased from 3.4 percent in 2009 to 4.0 percent in 2010. Helfgot even cited the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future survey on teen drug use as the source for that statistic. Unfortunately, the Monitoring the Future study doesn’t support his fictitious statistic (quoted below): [Read more…]
