Geoff Purdie, a constable with the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS), has pleaded guilty to smuggling anabolic steroids from the United States into Canada. The estimated street value of the drugs involved was reported to be $580,000. Purdie entered the guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Richard Arcara in Buffalo, New York. Purdie avoided the more serious charge of “conspriacy to export controlled substances with the intent to distribute.” Still, the steroid smuggling offense carries a maximum penalty of ten years imprisonment. The fastest marathon runner in history has responded to doping allegations made by the German press. Patrick Makau, the world record holder in the marathon with a time of 2:03:38, did not explicitly deny using anabolic steroids, erythroipoietin (EPO) or any other performance-enhancing drug (PED). Alexander Lukashenko, the President of the Republic of Belarus as well as the President of the National Olympic Committee, has been on a rampage after his country failed to meet expectations at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
