Steroid Dealer Goes to Prison With Father on Deathbed

A Missouri man has been sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison for selling anabolic steroids. Steven Campbell pleaded guilty in September 2012 to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute anabolic steroids and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Campbell attempted to avoid prison so that he could care for his dying father. His father was suffering from the advanced stages of lung cancer. His request was denied.

Campbell was in the business of illegally selling steroids for a period of four years between June 2007 and July 2011. During this time, he made wholesale purchases of anabolic steroids and human growth hormone (hGH) from online sources located in various international countries. These included Mexico, China, Czech Republic, Turkey, Sweden and Israel. He also obtained steroids and hGH from domestic sources in Connecticut and California.

Altogether, Campbell and his co-defendants paid over $100,000 for steroids using Western Union and Moneygram. Campbell admitted reselling the steroids and performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) for approximately $400,455. In addition to imprisonment, Campbell was ordered to pay a cash judgment representing the proceeds of his crimes. Towards this end, Campbell was required to forfeit $6,482 in cash, a 2008 Chrysler 300 and a 2008 BMW 535.

Campbell, his attorney and family and friends attempted to convince United States District Judge Carol Jackson that Campbell was deserving of a “non-guideline sentence” or downward departure from federal sentencing guidelines.

Campbell begged the court for mercy given that his father was dying of late-stage lung cancer.

Based on a prior criminal history based on non-violent, alcohol and other traffic related offenses, sentencing guidelines were calculated at 70-87 months.

Judge Jackson sentenced Campbell to 92 months in prison.

At the time of sentencing, Campbell had not yet notified his father that he would not be able to take care of him during his remaining days.

“The hardest things will be sitting him down, and telling him how his only son has made a big mess of his life,” Campbell wrote to Judge Jackson. “I am truly sorry for all I have done.”
