Former NYPD Sergeant Involved in Steroid Scandal Busted Stealing from Apple Store

A former New York Police Department (NYPD) sergeant involved in a 2007 NYPD steroid scandal was recently busted stealing iPods, iPhones and iPads from the Apple Store in SoHo (New York). The irony of the arrest was that former “New York’s finest” was hired a security guard to protect the Apple Store from theft. Rather than actually prevent theft, he has been accused of stealing more than 100 high-end consumer electronic devices.

DaSilva was arrested and charged with grand theft by the Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance’s Cybercrime & Identity Theft Bureau for allegedly stealing $76,000 worth of merchandise from the SoHo store. Video surveillance cameras captured DaSilva in the act on six separate occasions between April and June 8, 2012. He was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court and released on his own recognizance.

DaSilva was formerly a NYPD sergeant at the 61st Precinct in Brooklyn. He was one of six officers who ultimately faced internal charges after the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau launched an investigation into over two dozen NYPD officers who were implicated in the Lowen’s Pharmacy steroid scandal in 2007.

NYPD’s investigation was initiated after Lowen’s Pharmacy in Brooklyn was raided by narcotics officers working for the Albany County District Attorney’s Office during the course of their multi-state investigation into steroid distribution by several longevity and life extension clinics.

Lowen’s was linked to Signature Pharmacy in Florida. Approximately $200,000 worth of anabolic steroids such as testosterone, Deca Durabolin and Winstrol were seized from the Brooklyn-based pharmacy. In addition, narcotics officers also seized a reported $7 million worth of Chinese human growth hormone (hGH).

DaSilva was suspended by NYPD after testing positive for anabolic steroids in 2007. The NYPD suspended him and placed him on modified duty. He left the department shortly thereafter and later found employment at the Apple Store in SoHo.
