Steroid Scandal at Singapore Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation

The president of the Singapore Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (SBBF) has admitted to dispensing advice regarding the use of anabolic steroids. While the widespread use of steroids, human growth hormone (hGH) and other muscle-building drugs is well-known in the world of bodybuilding, local news websites are treating the revelation involving SBBF President Rano Izhar as something of a scandal. Izhar didn’t distribute anabolic steroids. He simply disseminated information.

‘The New Paper’ obtained private emails between Izhar and a local amateur bodybuilder in the year prior to becoming president of SBBF. In the emails, Izhar provided detailed steroid advice to the bodybuilder. Izhar’s advice included instructions for two recommended steroid cycles.  The cycles were comprised of fourteen different types of anabolic steroids and ancillary drugs according to ‘The New Paper.’ Some of the steroids involved included Dianabol, Anadrol 50 and Primobolan Depot. Clomid, a selective estrogen receptor agonist (SERM), was also recommended.

Izhar emphasized that the steroid advice was intended solely for a friend who was an amateur bodybuilder and was given prior to his appointment as SBBF president.

Izhar’s friend was planning to use anabolic steroids anyway. Izhar simply wanted to help him use them in the safest manner possible.

“Yes, I discussed (the use of steroids) with him, but it was more towards the countermeasures of it,” said Izhar. “It’s not right if someone abuses (drugs) and suffers from the symptoms. So, I felt I needed to tell him what works and what doesn’t. When people come to me about such matters, and I know they’re going to use steroids no matter what, I can’t just push them away. I have to at least tell them what they need to know about it, so that they know the countermeasures.”

Izhar reportedly obtained a doctorate in ‘lifestyle medicine’ from Harvard Medical School. Given his medical training, Izhar felt obligated to promote harm reduction for athletes using steroids and performance-enhancing drugs.
