Supplement Store Owner Arrested for Selling Prohormones in Operation Bitter Pill?

A supplement store owner in Staten Island may have been arrested for selling prohormones as part of Operation Bitter Pill suggests a report by Slive.com. Douglas “Big Doug” Birstler, the owner of “D’s Muscle Box”, was charged with the possesssion and sale of controlled substances. Birstler’s Facebook page listed the availability of several popular prohormones that have been the subject of criminal investigations by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The FDA has accused several sports nutrition stores over the past couple of years of illegal marketing and distributing anabolic steroids, unapproved new and misbranded drugs labeled fraudulently as dietary supplements (prohormones).

“D’s Muscle Box” had claimed it carried a “carry a full line of legal prohormones” on its blog. Birstler suggested that many of these prohormones were in limited supply. These included prohormones and legal steroids “that you (can’t) find anymore” at other supplement stores according to a post in his now-deleted Facebook profile. Birstler had also promoted the sale of prohormones by providing his name and phone number on steroid-related blogs such as “Steroids Live”.

The main targets of Operation Bitter Pill were operating just up the street from “D’s Muscle Box”. The investigation by the NYPD Staten Island Narcotics Bureau focused on Nel-Boy Bagels, a Staten Island deli that served as a front for a “drug den” where police found hundreds of glassine bags of heroin along with syringes.

Police purchased and seized 100 bags of heroin, 8 ounces of marijuana, 300 grams of cocaine, 2,500 Oxycontin, 368 Percocet and 245 Xanax pills. Fifteen individuals were arrested for selling drugs and eight individuals were arrested for misdemeanor drug possession during the raid on the deli.

It is not clear if Birstler had any involvement with Nel-Boy Bagels.
