Bodybuilders Buy Steroids at the George W. Bush Bazaar in Afghanistan

Bodybuilding is booming in Afghanistan. While bodybuilding has always been popular in the country, it really took off after the United States invasion in 2001 led by former President George W. Bush in response to the events of September 11, 2001. The oppressive Taliban had previously outlawed all music and all sports with the curious exception of bodybuilding. United Kingdom Amends Steroid Laws to Ban Importation via Mail

The British government has accepted the recommendations of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (“ACMD”) concerning the existing steroid laws in the country. The personal possession of anabolic steroids for self-administration has been legal under the 1971 Misuse of Drugs Act. It will remain legal given the low level of harm associated with the use of steroids. However, the government will amend the steroid laws so that it will become illegal to import personal use quantities by mail. This effectively criminalizes the purchase of steroids over the internet from the thousands of internet pharmacies selling steroids. [Read more…]

Texas Cracking Down on Steroid-Using Bodybuilders “Wanting to Cheat the System”

The head of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is working to stop the flow of anabolic steroids to bodybuilders “wanting to cheat the system.” Bodybuilders who use steroids are apparently not only breaking the law but are also immoral cheaters according to Lt. Phillip Cash. The term “cheater” is usually applied to athletes involved in competitive sports who use performance-enhancing drugs in violation of the sport’s anti-doping code; they cheat the other athletes who presumably follow the rules. Yet bodybuilders who use steroids outside of a sporting context in order to improve physical appearance aren’t really “cheating” anyone else. Nonetheless, Lt. Cash asserts they are cheating “the system”. [Read more…]

Owner of Major Steroid Lab Busted in Virginia

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Department arrested the owner of a business that allegedly produced anabolic steroids. Steven Wood has been charged with two counts related to the distribution of anabolic steroids and five counts of money laundering. The name of the business involved has not been publicly disclosed. However, it appears that Wood was operating a sizable steroid enterprise given the amount of cash involved, the number of employees working for him and the quantity of raw steroid powder seized.

Law enforcement authorities and local media have characterized this “bust” as a major clandestine steroid operation. However, it may actually be a case involving a supplement company selling prohormones and other steroidal ingredients that may be prohibited under current law. [Read more…]
