Owner of Major Steroid Lab Busted in Virginia

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Department arrested the owner of a business that allegedly produced anabolic steroids. Steven Wood has been charged with two counts related to the distribution of anabolic steroids and five counts of money laundering. The name of the business involved has not been publicly disclosed. However, it appears that Wood was operating a sizable steroid enterprise given the amount of cash involved, the number of employees working for him and the quantity of raw steroid powder seized.

Law enforcement authorities and local media have characterized this “bust” as a major clandestine steroid operation. However, it may actually be a case involving a supplement company selling prohormones and other steroidal ingredients that may be prohibited under current law.

Authorities had obtained the cooperation of one of Wood’s employees. The police informant was responsible for shipping raw steroid powders to a contract manufacturing facility in North Carolina and returning the finished product to Wood. The informant also set up multiple bank accounts that were used to funnel the proceeds from the steroid business; the transactions often involved amounts in excess of $40,000 according to the informant. Wood created a corporation called BGW, LLC that could be used for this purpose.

Additionally, federal agents from the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) provided information to the local sheriff’s department that led to the interception of a multiple-pound package of steroids that arrived at Wood’s business in Blairs (Virginia).  DHS determined that the raw steroid powder were initially shipped from Shanghai (China). When Wood arrived in a car to observe the delivery, he reportedly had $300,000 cash with him.

Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s deputies, accompanied by agents from the Department of Homeland Security, executed a search warrant on September 14, 2011 and discovered “several hundred pounds of anabolic steroids” at the business maintained by Wood. The steroid seizure involved both encapsulated steroid products and raw steroid powders.

Wood remains in Pittsylvania County Jail. Bail has been set at $1 million.

UPDATE: The article has been revised to further describe the nature of the business alleged to have sold anabolic steroids.
