Australian Bodybuilder Pleads Guilty to Importing Three Kilograms of Steroid Powder

An Australian bodybuilder pleaded guilty to three counts of illegally importing anabolic steroids and two counts of possessing anabolic steroids. Brenton Dowell was caught attempting to import over three kilograms of testosterone from China.

The Australian Customs and Border Protection Service seized three packages containing steroid powder whose shipment was directed by Dowell in September, October and November 2010. The steroid packages were mailed to Dowell’s home, his stepfather’s home and his father’s home.

The intercepted packages contained a total of 3181.35 grams of testosterone powder. Some individual steroid users and underground labs (UGLs) use raw steroid powders to create their own injectable and oral steroids.

The illegally imported steroid powder provided the basis for law enforcement to obtain a search warrant of Dowell’s home. Investigators found 40 vials of human growth hormone (hGH) and several vials of injectable anabolic steroids stored in his refrigerator.

TheAge.com.au reported that the quantity of steroid powder possessed by Dowell was sufficient to use 1,000 milligrams of injectable testosterone every week for 61 years. Yet, prosecutors did not seek steroid distribution charges against Dowell.

Dowell started bodybuilding and using steroids in response to the bullying he experienced as an overweight child according to his defense attorney Len Hartnett

Hartnett admitted that his client was fully aware of the illegal nature of his steroid use. However, he was obsessed with his body image and bodybuilding and was willing to accept the risks.

Still, Dowell told the police that he doesn’t understand “why the government is so harsh on steroids”.

Judge Grame Hicks is scheduled to sentence Dowell on April 17, 2012. He faces a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and a $110,000 fine.
