Mark Mansa Allegedly Sold Steroids to College Athlete and National Level Bodybuilder

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Vizcarrondo announced several months ago that the government had dropped all steroid charges against Mark Mansa as part of an agreement in which Mansa pleaded guilty one count of conspiracy to distribute one hundred kilograms or more of marijuana. Nevertheless, the Newstimes.com website has reported additional information regarding some of his steroid customers that was recently released in court documents.  The government claimed that Mansa sold steroids to an unidentified college athlete. The athlete told the government he first started purchasing anabolic steroids from Mansa while he played sports in high school.

Mansa was the primary target of  a five-year, joint investigation by the Danbury Police and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). the investigation was primarily a marijuana distribution case but Mansa also distributed significant quantities of anabolic steroids. A cooperating witness identified as “Weirdo Steve” told police investigators that he sold an average of 70 vials of various anabolic steroid injectable products per month over a multi-year period. In addition, Mansa referred some of his friends directly to “Weirdo Steve”.

National Physique Committee (NPC) bodybuilder “PJ” Braun was a national-level bodybuilder who happened to be one friend who was referred to “Weirdo Steve”. Braun had the bad luck of buying steroids from a local source who had been cooperating with the feds for several years.

The police arrested Braun in March 2011 after obtaining a warrant and observing various steroids in plain sight, including testosterone, Deca Durabolin, Halotestin and Proviron, at his apartment. The quantities were consistent with personal use and police did not suspect Braun of dealing steroids.

Nonetheless, Braun was caught up in the larger investigation and faced several charges including three counts of possession of a controlled substance (anabolic steroids) and three counts of possession of prescription legend drugs. His attorney Rick Collins negotiated an agreement in which all charges would be dropped upon the successful completion of a steroid education program where he learns the government’s version of steroid “education”.

Mark Mansa is scheduled to be sentenced this week on the marijuana distribution charges.
