Two British Men Given Suspended Prison Sentences for Stealing Steroid Alternatives

“Men stole anabolic steroids” reads the headline of a news story in the Plymouth Herald newspaper. The two men identified in the story didn’t really steal “anabolic steroids”. They stole a “steroid alternative” product marketed as a dietary supplement by Ultimate Sports Nutrition (USN). While the newspaper was certainly uninformed about the products involved in the crime, it is unclear if the prosecutors or judge knew that the stolen merchandise was a non-hormonal steroid replacement supplement.

Michael Capeling and Michael Tucker stole four bottles of USN 19 Anabol Testo from the Holand and Barrett supplement store on Cornwall Street in Plymouth (United Kingdom). The 720 capsules had a retail value of £243.96 ($379) according to Crown Prosecution Service’s Eoin McCarthy. The duo acted suspiciously and attracted the attention of staff at Holland and Barrett. Closed circuit television cameras recorded the theft. Two bottles of 19 Anabol Testo were recovered from each man during the failed theft.

Anabol Testo does not contain illegal anabolic steroids. Its listed ingredients include fenugreek, 5-Methyl-7-Methoxy-Isoflavone, 20-Hydroxy Ecdysterone, Avena Sativa extract, 7-Isopropoxyisoflavone, ZMA and Bioperine.

Graham Kinchin, the defense attorney for the two men, had few nice things to say about his clients although he acknowledged that his clients were staying out of trouble.

“This was rather a pathetic attempt at shoplifting. They were always going to be caught,” said Kinchin. “It was pretty much on the spur of the moment.”

Plymouth magistrates sentenced the men to 16-weeks imprisonment but suspended the sentence for 18 months. They were ordered to complete 200 hours of volunteer community service.

The two have previously been convicted for similar offenses.

One of the men has since completed a catering course. Perhaps USN would consider using the convicts in an advertising campaign: “19-Anabol Testo – Worth going to jail for!”
